Gift Guide For The Outdoors Enthusiast

Published:

Into the (Red)woods

For the outdoorsperson in your life, gift them a year of adventure with the Centennial Redwood Celebration Golden Poppy Annual Pass. With access to more than 110 state parks, beaches, and recreation areas, the pass is a no-excuses way to explore California’s natural wonders, including our native redwoods.

“The new annual pass is a perfect way for friends and families to enjoy exercise and fresh air in California’s incredibly beautiful places and to learn about our state’s fascinating natural and cultural history,” says Lisa Mangat, director of California State Parks.

Plus, pass holders get unlimited visits to parks throughout California. Think viewing elephant seals year-round at Año Nuevo State Park, sunbathing at Refugio State Beach, and gazing at the towering coastal redwoods at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.

All proceeds will go toward protecting redwood forests and other state parks throughout California. This has always been the mission of Save the Redwoods League, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2018. The League has led the effort to protect the coastal redwoods and giant sequoias that California cherishes, and in its 100 years, has protected more than 204,000 acres of redwood forests and lands.

By teaming up with California State Parks, the league is making it possible to turn 2018 into a year of exploration and outdoor fun for everyone in your family.

Glow in the Dark

Send the night owl on your gift list on a Bioluminescence Tour of Tomales Bay with Blue Waters Kayaking, when the night waters light up in a display of natural wonder.

The four-hour kayaking tour takes off just before sunset, with a guide leading the group to a prime viewing location as the dark settles around the Bay. No need to worry about seeing a good show—Blue Waters Kayaking schedules its tours around the phases of the moon, so it’s sure to be a moonless night; July through October are the months with the best conditions for the bioluminescence critters to really glow.

Blue Waters also offers camping tours where groups of up to 20 kayak to a campsite along the water, explore Tamales Bay during the day, and then embark on a guided night tour with a bioluminescence show.
