We Love the Nightlife: Cinco de Mayo in the Home

Where to drink, eat, and party on the fifth, plus other weekend events and nightlife happenings.

Wait a second, how is it already May? Despite the fact that I think it’s an incredibly sneaky month, May is shaping up to be a great 31 days for nightlife, if this weekend is any indication. Here’s a roundup of a few of my favorite Cinco de Mayo events in the Home, plus other happenings if you’re not in the mood for cervesa-fueled celebrations.

Tequila flight at BarbacoaCinco de Mayo Celebrations

Barbacoa: The Orinda Mexican joint is celebrating all weekend long with food and drink specials, live entertainment, and activities for the kids. 2 Theatre Sq., Orinda, (925) 254-1183, .

Bocanova: The Oakland restaurant will be offering two margarita specials for Cinco de Mayo. The first is a sparkling champagne margarita ($9), and the second is a cool, refreshing cucumber margarita ($7). Also look for a special, prix fixe dinner and dessert, served family style, for $28, plus other drink specials. Sunday, May 5, 4–9:30 p.m., 55 Webster St., Oakland, (510) 444-1233, .

Chipotle: Did you realize you could get booze at Chipotle? I guess I always go for the soda and never realized I could pair my burrito bowl with the sweet sweet nectar. For Cinco de Mayo, try the Mexican chain’s new premium Patron margarita, which will run you $6.95. Click for locations.

La Borinqueña Mex-icatessen: Fancy a little mariachi with your Cinco de Mayo celebration? Tina Tamale and La Borinqueña Mex-icatessen are joining forces for a family-friendly bash, complete with a live performance from Mariachi Nueva Luz. Nosh on chips and salsa and you choice of an entrée, which are included in the ticket price. You can also pick up handmade pottery from Mexico by Hand. $10 in advance, $15 at the door, children under 12 free, Sunday, May 5, 12–3 p.m., 582 Seventh St., Oakland, .

Maria Maria: Getting ready for three days of celebration at Danville’s Maria Maria, which host live music on the patio, Friday through Sunday, plus a big bash on the fifth. Look for a taco bar, drink specials, and an appearance from the Corona girls. The best part? There’s no cover. Friday, May 3–Sunday, May 5, 710 Camino Ramon, Danville, (925) 820-2366, .

Pete’s Brass Rail and Car Wash: Although it may be known for its ever-changing beer offerings, this Sunday, Pete’s goes all out for Cinco de Mayo. The Danville restaurant will offer three premium tequilas, poured tableside from 2–5 p.m., plus house made Mexican specials ranging from blackened chicken taquitos to pork chile verde. The rare tequilas include a Don Julio 1942, Clase Azul Añejo, and Casa Noble Añejo, all for seriously reduced prices. Sunday, May 5, 2–5 p.m., 201 Hartz Ave., Danville, (925) 820-8281, .

Other Events

Uncorked on Fourth: Shop Berkeley’s Fourth Street tonight, and they’ll let you booze it up, too. During the first annual Uncorked on Fourth, participating shops and restaurants will offer wine samples and finger foods to anyone with a ticket. $25, Thursday, May 2, 4–8 p.m., Fourth St., Berkeley, .

Livermore Wine Country Festival: Now in its 22nd year, this popular Livermore festival is embracing both wine and beer. This weekend, you can explore more than 300 vendor booths, plus pick up tasting packages for either beer or wine (or both!), depending on where your preferences lie. Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and Sunday, May 5, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., downtown Livermore,

Picán Kentucky Derby Party: Since my dad was from Kentucky, I have a soft spot for the derby, and I was beyond excited to hear that Pican is hosting a party in honor of the race. On Saturday, stop by the Oakland restaurant’s party for the televised races, unlimited mint juleps (oh yes, you read that right), festive food, a DJ, and dancing. Click here for your chance to win one of our three pairs of tickets to the party. You can also call or email [email protected] to reserve a spot.  $49, Saturday, May 4, 1–4 p.m., (510) 834-1000, event information.

In this week’s Dish, Ethan hints that Calicraft’s Blaine Landberg is getting close to nailing down a Walnut Creek location for a small brewery and tap room. Spill already!
