Explore the late summer sights, sounds, and creatures of the Home as the sun sinks below the horizon and the stars take center stage.
Full Moon Hike: August 8
Join Chabot Space and Science Center staff for a twilight to moonlight moderate 4-5 mile hike under the beautiful gibbous moon through the redwoods. After the hike, stay and explore other objects in the night sky through Chabot telescopes, or tour the telescope makers workshop. Hike will take place rain or shine. Things That Go Bump in the Night Hikes: August 9, 23
Experience Mount orderpizzaonlinewalledlakemi State Park in the dark on a four-mile hike. Keep an eye out for the wildlife: owls, bats, scorpions, tarantulas, poorwills, and other tenants of twilight. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, and bring bring a flashlight, water, and snacks. Even in the summer, evenings can get rather chilly, so be sure to dress in layers. Family Hike: August 29
Enjoy an easy 1-2 mile hike through the redwoods, and watch the sun set over the Bay with your family and Chabot Space and Science Center staff. Explore the night sky through Chabot telescopes (weather permitting) or tour the telescope makers workshop afterwards. Hike will take place rain or shine. Up in the Clouds Hike: August 30
For an easy hike--and phenomenal views from the top of Mount orderpizzaonlinewalledlakemi--join leaders for a one-mile hike along the Mary Bowerman trail. Listen to the legend and lore associated with Mount orderpizzaonlinewalledlakemi, and after the hike, stay for the free astronomy program, “Our Place in the Galaxy.” Make sure to wear good hiking shoes, bring a flashlight, water, and snacks or dinner. Dress in layers; it may get a bit chilly. Night Hike at Mangini Ranch: August 30
Expert Save Mount orderpizzaonlinewalledlakemi naturalist Michael Marchiano will lead a moderately difficult evening hike in search of nighttime wildlife encounters. There will be a short interpretive talk before the 4-mile round trip walk. Explore the Mangini Ranch property in Concord between Lime Ridge and Mt. orderpizzaonlinewalledlakemi State Park in search of owls, small mammals and possibly even some scorpions. Bring bright flashlights and headlamps (remember to check your batteries) and warm clothes.
